I also use RGB leds, but I have spent a little more! 30 pieces to the center and 18 pieces per side, they are installed on my 46" flat panel display, and looks great.
The only drawback of the RGB leds, they are not as good at mixing colors, I have built them in diffuser pipes to get the desired effect.
